What semen analysis measures
A semen analysis looks at semen volume, sperm concentration, movement, and shape. It may also note signs of infection or other abnormalities.
Results can vary from sample to sample, so a repeat test may be advised before making major treatment decisions.
Why it is done early
Male factors contribute to many infertility cases. Testing early prevents delays and helps the team choose between timed intercourse, IUI, IVF, ICSI, or sperm retrieval techniques.
If sperm count or movement is very low, a doctor may advise hormonal tests, genetic tests, ultrasound, or consultation with an andrology specialist.
Preparation helps accuracy
Patients are usually asked to follow abstinence instructions before the test and collect the sample in a clean, clinic-approved container.
