Sperm Freezing: Who Should Consider It?

Sperm freezing can preserve fertility options before medical treatment, travel, surgery, or planned IVF.

Common reasons

Sperm freezing may be advised before chemotherapy, radiotherapy, testicular surgery, vasectomy, or treatments that may affect sperm production.

It can also be useful before IVF if the male partner may not be available on the day of egg retrieval or has difficulty producing a sample under pressure.

How storage works

A semen sample is collected, processed, divided into small portions, and stored at very low temperatures. Multiple samples may be recommended when possible.

Before freezing, clinics may request infection screening and consent forms.

Planning ahead

Freezing is most useful when done before sperm quality is affected. Patients facing medical treatment should ask early.
