Why people freeze eggs
Egg freezing may be considered before cancer treatment, before ovarian surgery, for low ovarian reserve concerns, or when someone wants to preserve reproductive options while delaying pregnancy.
The process does not guarantee a baby later, but it can provide an additional option using eggs collected at a younger age.
What the process includes
Egg freezing usually includes ovarian stimulation, ultrasound monitoring, egg retrieval, and freezing mature eggs using vitrification. The eggs remain stored until the patient decides whether to use them.
When used later, eggs are thawed, fertilized with sperm, and embryos are transferred after development in the laboratory.
Questions to ask
Patients should ask about expected egg yield, storage duration, future use, cost, and how age affects the chance of success.
